I've had several suggestions on this matter that it is okay to go twice the mileage between oil changes on a diesel engine. I couldn't imagine going 10,000 miles in between an oil change, but also couldn't imagine going 6,000 miles as I was recommended. I've had the truck for 5 years and never a problem with the engine. What would be your recommended oil change (now; if they apply for diesel, or if us diesel owners are screwed on that as we are on fuel prices) on just a regular 7.3 Powerstroke diesel. The truck is also just two-wheel drive and does not go off the highway in any kind of extreme conditions. The location of the truck is North-Central Alabama and is the main area it stays in(if weather conditions apply).
Your 7.3 Power Stroke Diesel has almost 4 gallons of oil and this large volume of oil allows for longer drain intervals for your engine oil. With light use, I would recommend 6,000 to 7,500 on a good quality petroleum oil (Chevron, Shell Rotella, Valvoline to name some). The best choice is to go with Amsoil synthetic diesel oil and change your oil once a year not to exceed 25,000 miles. I know this sounds insane but Amsoil has been selling extended drain oil for 35 years and the company continues to grow at double digit numbers every year. I have monitored diesel engines with Amsoil, by used oil analysis, and the results are simply amazing. Of course, you do not have to run the oil to the maximum but just going 3 times what you are doing now would both save money and increase you protection.
